Book a Commission
Here you can find all the information you need about booking a commission from me and what to expect
My primary source of work are my commissions, drawing pets, family members and friends, or wildlife in general. Each order is unique in nature and, therefore, prices vary depending on what is desired. You can find my price guide here, however please contact me with what you require and your reference photos for a quote on price and postage costs, as well as if you require a custom size not otherwise listed.
Once you’ve decided on a size you can request your commission by using the contact form found here, or you can email me at caitlinbellportraits@gmail.com. An initial 30% deposit is required to secure your order, with the remainder being paid upon completion when you are satisfied with your portrait. Additional postage is paid along with the remainder of the price and varies depending on size and where in the world you are located.
Photos
In terms of reference photos, the better the quality, the easier it is for me to recreate your beloved family members and catch their spirit in pencil and paper. I require good lighting which shows the colour accurately and doesn’t hide the subject in shadow. For smaller portraits, head and shoulder portraits are ideal. However, if you want your pet fully in shot, a sitting pose is best. For A4 size and bigger, most poses are generally okay. However, sit poses, head and shoulders, or lying down still work best. Furthermore, photos which are too pixelated or blurry will make it far more difficult for me to draw your animals or friends/family members and I may ask you for different, better quality photos.
In the case that your pet is no longer with you, if they have passed away or moved on, I will do my best to work with what we have. In this case, it is a good idea to send me as many reference photos as possible if certain features are covered up by filters or just cut out of the photo for example, or to give me an idea of the colour of their fur. In the case that I have to imagine what some body parts look like, or in the case that I need to combine and draw from several different reference photos to get a starting sketch, I may have to give you a higher price to reflect the extra time needed to sketch and revise until you’re happy with it. Also, in this case, I will be in touch with you more often to ensure that you are happy with everything from the initial sketch, the colour of the fur to making sure that the important characteristics are all included in the portrait.
Time Scale
Time scale from when you order to starting the portrait and receiving your order will depend on how many portraits I have to work on, as well as other commitments. If you are ordering for a specific date such as Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries etc., I will organise my diary accordingly and try my best to work to that deadline. If I know I cannot fit your portrait in in time for that specific date I will let you know as soon as I have looked at my diary. As my schedule is constantly changing due to work and other commitments, it is best to just contact me to find out my earliest availability. You can contact me at the bottom of this page by filling in the contact form, emailing me, or messaging me via social media or text.
Postage and Packaging
Postage for portraits varies depending on the size and weight of the envelope I send in the post. I send all of my portraits with Royal Mail either by Signed For First Class or Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm.
Both of these options have tended to arrive the next working day as long as I get to the Post Office in time and no portrait so far has arrived damaged so I am confident using either service. However, for that extra piece of mind, I would choose Special Delivery as it is fully tracked.
I package my portraits against a piece of grey board for rigidity and sealed in a cellophane bag to keep out any dust and moisture. It is then sent in a board-back envelope with business cards and a thank you card. If the portrait is for a gift, I can also write a gift message at no extra charge.
For commissions over £100, UK postage is free. International postage will need to be discussed individually. For UK delivery by Royal Mail, postage costs for portraits under £100 start from £3.50 for Signed for First Class for Quick Sketches, and from £8 for Special Delivery fully tracked guaranteed by 1 pm.
For postage quotes for any other portrait option and/or location other than the UK please contact me through any of the available channels.
